Mold Vs Mildew
Mold and mildew are both types of fungi that can thrive in any moist environment. Both mold and mildew can be found in your home. So, what’s the difference? We’ll tell you:
Mildew:
Mildew is just mold in it’s early stages. Mildew can vary in color, although it is usually black, brown, yellow or white. Mildew is often described as appearing flat or dusty. Mildew typically lies on the surface of a wet or moist area. It is usually easily combatted when treated with the right cleaner and a scrubbing brush. Mildew is generally not as big of a concern as mold.
Mold:
Mold in your home is more of a concern than mildew. Mold grows in colonies and can start to form on a damp surface after 24-48 hours. Mold is usually green black or white and is described to look thick and fuzzy or slimy. Mold attaches to affected materials with microscopic filaments that penetrate deep beneath the surface. Mold can also survive in extreme conditions, making it so that it can quickly affect large areas of your property. Mold can ruin any surface it settles upon, which can result in permanent damage. Mold cannot be as easily rid of as mildew can, and it should be treated by a professional ASAP.
Preventing Mold and Mildew:
The best way to prevent mold and mildew growth is to keep your home dry and moisture-free. Also, maintain a humidity level of about 40-50% in your home. Keep air ducts clean and maintained, have your heating and cooling system inspected regularly, and unsure good air circulation inside of your home. Make sure there are no leaks in the bathroom, kitchen etc. To prevent mildew infestation, remove mildew affected plants from your home.
